Tokaj

Tokaj, Hungary

History

A small town at the meeting of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers that gives its name to a famous sweet wine region, with cellars under the old streets. Book a cellar visit ahead and plan a night stay if you intend to taste.

Tokaj lies at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in northern Hungary and is the centre of the wine region where Tokaji Aszú is made. The wine-growing area is first mentioned under the name Tokaj in 1067, while the town itself is documented from 1353. The wine region has been a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 2002; Tokaj-Hegyalja comprises 28 villages and around 11,000 hectares of classified vineyards.

In the town you can see the Rákóczi-Dessewffy Castle, several churches and the remains of the old fortress; a walk to the confluence of the rivers is part of the visit. You can arrive via Main Road 38. If you want to taste wines, it is best to stay overnight locally and leave the car behind. A few hours are enough for the town, one to two days for the region.
