Zádiel Gorge

Zádielske Dvorníky, Slovakia

Nature

A narrow limestone canyon in the Slovak Karst with walls hundreds of metres high, followed by an easy trail along the stream. Come on a dry day and bring shoes with good grip for the rocky path.

The Zádielska tiesňava gorge in the Slovak Karst is about 2,200 metres long and 300 metres deep, in places up to 400 metres. At its narrowest point the valley floor is only about 10 metres wide. It cuts through white limestone and is protected as a National Nature Reserve. The rock pinnacle Cukrová homoľa (“Sugarloaf”), 105 metres high, is a striking landmark. Thanks to a temperature inversion, plants of cool, moist habitats and of warm, dry habitats grow side by side here.

An educational trail runs through the valley, with numerous viewpoints. Allow around two to three hours for the round trip. Go in dry weather and wear sure-footed shoes, as the path is stony. Information is available at the Moldava nad Bodvou information centre.
