Hortobágy Nine-Arch Bridge

Hortobágy, Hungary

Nature

A long stone bridge on the edge of the Hortobágy puszta, the vast open grassland where herdsmen still keep grey cattle and racka sheep. Stop for photos, then drive on to see the herds and the wide horizon.

The Nine-Arch Bridge at Hortobágy, at 167.3 metres in total length, is the longest stone bridge in Hungary. Work began in 1827, it was completed in 1833, and it was designed by Ferenc Povolny. A wooden bridge had stood on the spot before, recorded since the 14th century. The bridge lay on an important trade route between Transylvania and Pest-Buda, along which salt and cattle were moved. Its funnel-shaped approach made it easier to drive herds across.

The bridge is the best-known symbol of Hortobágy National Park, Hungary's first and therefore oldest national park (1973; UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999). On the puszta, herdsmen called csikós tend Hungarian grey cattle, Racka sheep and Nonius horses. A stop at the bridge does not take long; with a drive into the puszta and some birdwatching, you can plan half a day.
