Reine
Reine, Norway
Red fishing cabins below sharp peaks in the Lofoten Islands. Many rorbuer can be rented.
Reine is the administrative centre of Moskenes municipality at the far western end of Lofoten and has about 300 inhabitants. The village is spread over a chain of small islands linked by bridges. Fishing and fish processing still shape daily life; you may photograph the drying stockfish but not touch it, as it is food. Many of the traditional rorbuer, red fishermen's cabins on stilts, are now let to visitors; book early for summer and the northern lights season.
The climb up Reinebringen on stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas gives the best-known view; go early or late in the day. It is strongly advised against in winter, and you should also skip it in bad weather. The midnight sun shines in early summer, and the northern lights can be seen from autumn to spring. The ferry from Bodø docks at Moskenes, a short drive from Reine. Park only in designated spaces and camp only where it is permitted.
