Å i Lofoten
Å, Norway
A fishing village at the very end of the E10 road, with red fishing cabins and a stockfish museum. Park at the village entrance, walk the waterfront and bring wind-proof clothing.
Å lies on the island of Moskenesøya and is the end of European route E10. The village is a traditional fishing community with historic cabins and landing stages and only about 100 inhabitants. The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum preserves buildings from roughly 1840 to 1960, including a boathouse, cod-liver-oil factory, smithy, post office and bakery. The bakery, open in the summer season, still uses its stone oven from 1878. The Lofoten Stockfish Museum is nearby.
Allow about two to three hours for the museum and a walk around the village. In summer, craftspeople demonstrate old techniques such as blacksmithing at the museum. You can park near the museum entrance, about a three-minute walk from the village centre. The village has more than 500 beds, including traditional fishermen's cabins, apartments and hostels. The weather on the edge of the island chain is often rough, so wind- and rainproof clothing is advisable.
