Lofotr Viking Museum

Borg, Norway

History

A reconstruction of an 83 m chieftain’s longhouse on the site where the original was excavated, with a Viking ship on the lake below.

In Borg on Vestvågøya, one of the Lofoten islands, a chieftain's house was discovered in 1983. From 1986 to 1989 a joint Scandinavian research project carried out excavations there. The foundation was 83 m long and 9.5 m wide; the reconstructed longhouse is 9 m high. The museum opened in 1995 and shows further Viking Age buildings alongside the chieftain's house.

You can explore the longhouse, see replicas of Viking ships, watch blacksmith demonstrations and learn more about life in Borg and its excavation. From May to mid-September the museum is open daily; after that it keeps reduced opening days until the end of the year (as of October 2026), so check the times on the museum's website before you go. Plan on about half a day if you want to take in the guided tours and demonstrations.
