Before you go

  • According to Lofoten tourism, motorhomes can usually stay up to two nights at pull-outs without parking bans. At some car parks in Vågan overnight stays are banned. Never drive onto open terrain.
  • Since 2021 the six municipalities share a joint outdoor regulation. At several places, such as around Reinebringen, Reine and Sørvågvatnet, tent camping is banned for part of the year. See the Lofoten outdoor council map.
  • Toilet waste must be emptied only at disposal stations. Open fires are banned in and near forest and wild land from 15 April to 15 September.

Planning

Lofoten has six municipalities: Vågan, Vestvågøy, Flakstad, Moskenes, Værøy and Røst. Higravstinden on Austvågøy rises to roughly 1,150 m. The E10 links the main islands with bridges and tunnels, including the Nappstraumen tunnel. A ferry runs from Bodø to Moskenes, and further links serve Værøy and Røst. The midnight sun lasts from late May to mid-July, depending on the location.

Camping

Under the Norwegian right to roam, camping in nature is allowed at least 150 m from inhabited buildings and away from cultivated land. In Lofoten, stays are usually limited to two nights in one place. Motorhomes must stay on roads and legal pull-outs. Several sites are closed to camping, so use a campsite in peak season. Take all waste with you, including toilet waste.

Getting around

The E10 is the main road and passes through bridges and tunnels, so check height and width limits, and winter road conditions, with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen). Driving off roads is banned under the Motor Traffic Act. Lofotodden National Park also bans drones. Book ferries to Moskenes ahead in the busy season.
