Roman Theatre of Orange

Orange, France

History

A Roman theatre whose stage wall still stands at full height, one of the best preserved in Europe, still used for concerts and opera. Shade is scarce in the seating, so bring a hat in summer.

Orange was founded in 35 BC as the Roman colony of Arausio, and major monuments were built here under Emperor Augustus. The theatre leans against the Saint-Eutrope hill and seated about 10,000 spectators. Its stage wall is 37 m high and is regarded as the best preserved of any Roman theatre in western Europe; the theatre has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. A 3.55 m statue of Augustus stands in the central niche.

Thanks to the surviving wall, the acoustics are outstanding; a modern glass roof protects the wall. The Chorégies d'Orange, a festival of opera and classical music, has been held here since 1869. Visitors receive free audio guides in ten languages; the site is open all year with varying hours. In summer a hat is a good idea on the tiers of seating.
