Roman Vaison

Vaison-la-Romaine, France

History

Two excavated districts of a Roman town, with streets, villas and a theatre that still hosts summer performances. A Roman bridge leads to the medieval upper town.

Vaison-la-Romaine was a Gallo-Roman town known as Vasio Vocontiorum. The tourist office describes the excavation sites of Puymin and La Villasse as the largest Gallo-Roman site in France. Visitors can see Roman town houses, such as the House of the Dolphin, which covers 2,700 m². The theatre was probably built under Emperor Tiberius and is still used for performances today. A museum displays sculptures and everyday objects.

A Roman bridge from the 1st century AD still crosses the Ouvèze and leads to the medieval upper town (Haute-Ville) with its castle. A combined PASS ticket covers the two excavation sites, the theatre and the museum, and is valid for 24 hours; allow half a day to a full day for the excavations and the upper town. In summer, mornings are more pleasant for sightseeing.
