A three-tier Roman aqueduct bridge over the Gardon river. You can swim below it in summer.
The Pont du Gard is part of a Roman aqueduct some 50 km long that, from the mid-1st century AD, carried water from a spring near Uzès to Nîmes, ancient Nemausus, and remained in use until around the early 6th century. The bridge is almost 49 m high and has three tiers of arches stacked one above the other; the top tier now measures about 275 m, compared with some 360 m originally. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
You can walk across the bridge and see models and reconstructions in the museum. The "Mémoires de Garrigue" trail on the left bank, about 1.4 km long, takes around an hour through the typical Mediterranean scrubland known as garrigue. In summer the right bank of the Gardon becomes a bathing beach. Allow at least an hour and a half, or a whole day if you want to walk and swim. There are supervised car parks on both banks.
