Stone Mountain Park
Stone Mountain, GA
A huge granite dome east of Atlanta with a summit trail, a cable car and a lake and trails at its foot. The hike up is short but steep, so start early in summer and bring water.
Stone Mountain rises to 1,683 feet (513 m) above sea level. The Walk-Up Trail is about 1 mile (1.6 km) long and gains roughly 700 feet (210 m); it is rated moderate to hard. The route is marked with yellow blazes painted on the rock and climbs steadily, with some sections steeper than 20% and metal handrails. About 0.6 mile (1 km) from the start stands a covered rest stop, the "Halfway House." The smooth granite becomes slippery when wet or covered with sand or pine needles.
According to the park, allow one to one and a half hours. On a clear day the view reaches as far as about 60 miles (100 km), taking in the Atlanta skyline, the North Georgia mountains and Stone Mountain Lake. Bring sturdy shoes and water; in summer, it is best to start early in the day.
