Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park

Atlanta, GA

History

A cluster of sites in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn district, including Dr. King's birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church and his tomb. Start at the visitor center, and check ahead if you want a home tour, as access is limited.

The park in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn neighborhood traces Martin Luther King's life from his birth in 1929 to his assassination in 1968. The visitor center is at 450 Auburn Avenue NE. It is the best place to begin, with exhibits and films on King and the civil rights movement. Outside, Peace Plaza and the Civil Rights Walk of Fame invite a stroll.

The park includes his birth home (501 Auburn Avenue), Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King preached alongside his father, the King Center with Freedom Hall next to the tomb, and Fire Station No. 6 of 1894. The birth home can only be visited on ranger-led tours. According to the National Park Service, advance reservations are not available: spots (15 people per tour) are given out on the day of your visit and fill up quickly (as of October 2026). Allow half a day for all the sites, and check opening hours beforehand.
