Salem Witch Museum

Salem, MA

History

Life-size dioramas tell the story of the 1692 witch trials. October brings huge crowds.

The Salem Witch Museum opened in 1972 on Washington Square in Salem, in a former church building designed by Minard Lafever and built between 1844 and 1846 as the meeting house of the East Church. Its centerpiece is a presentation of about 20 minutes in a darkened hall: 13 life-size stage sets, lighting and narration retell the story of the witch trials of 1692.

Afterward, the exhibit "Witches: Evolving Perceptions" traces how the image of the witch has changed – from the European witch hunts to modern "witch hunts" such as the McCarthy era. Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half in total. Entry is by timed ticket every 30 minutes. In October, when Salem celebrates Halloween with its Haunted Happenings festival, crowds are at their biggest; if you are flexible, come in another month.
