Beacon Hill

Boston, MA

History

Gas lamps, brick rowhouses and cobbled lanes make this one of Boston's most photogenic neighborhoods, with Acorn Street its best-known corner. Arrive on foot or by transit, as street parking is scarce and permit-limited.

Beacon Hill is a National Historic Landmark and covers only about one-sixth of a square mile (0.4 km²). The neighborhood takes its name from a signal beacon set up there in 1634 to warn of attacks. The architect Charles Bulfinch, who also designed the State House, completed in 1798, shaped its development. Between 1807 and 1832 the hill was cut down from 138 to 80 feet (42 to 24 m), and the excavated material was used to enlarge Boston's land area.

Today the area is defined by brick houses, wrought-iron details, brick sidewalks, narrow streets and gas lamps. Acorn Street, a narrow cobblestone lane, is often described as one of the most photographed streets in the United States, and Louisburg Square is considered an especially prestigious address. In the 19th century a significant African American community lived here, and the African Meeting House, built in 1806, was an important site for abolitionists. The narrow streets are best explored on foot, for about one to two hours. It is quieter here early in the day.
