Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

Newburyport, MA

Nature

A barrier island of dunes, salt marsh and beach on Plum Island, popular with birdwatchers and walkers. Go in spring or autumn for migrating birds, and note that parking can fill up and sections close for nesting shorebirds.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1942 to provide food, resting places and nesting habitat for migratory birds. It covers 4,662 acres (about 1,900 ha) and the southern part of Plum Island, a barrier island about 8 miles (13 km) long near Newburyport. Habitats include beach, dunes, freshwater and salt marshes, swamps and bogs. More than 300 bird species have been recorded, and the island lies on the Atlantic Flyway.

Activities include hiking, cycling, photography and birdwatching, and there are observation towers and platforms. Allow at least half a day. The best viewing is during the spring and fall migrations. The beach is usually closed from April 1 to July 1 to protect nesting piping plovers (as of October 2026), the fall deer hunt restricts access, and parking is limited. Check the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website before you go.
