Rubjerg Knude

A tall coastal dune and cliff in North Jutland with an old lighthouse, once swallowed by drifting sand, standing close to the sea. Walk from the car park, wear shoes for loose sand, and check wind and weather first.
The Rubjerg Knude lighthouse stands on the North Sea coast of Jutland between Lønstrup and Løkken, some 60 m above the sea. It was first lit on 27 December 1900 and decommissioned in 1968 because the sand had piled so high that its light could no longer be seen from the sea. The coast retreats by about 1.5 m a year on average. For this reason the 23 m high, 720 tonne tower was moved 70 m inland on 22 October 2019.
From the car park on Fyrvejen near Løkken it is about 300 m on foot to the lighthouse. The terrain is not recommended for wheelchairs. The site is accessible all year round and attracts around 250,000 visitors a year. Wear sturdy shoes, as the path runs through sand, and check the wind and weather beforehand. One to two hours is enough for a visit.
