Råbjerg Mile
Skagen, Denmark
A large migrating dune of fine sand south of Skagen, with a desert-like landscape that moves slowly across the heath each year. Walk from the car park through the dunes, and bring water on a hot day.
Råbjerg Mile, near Skagen, is Denmark’s largest migrating dune. It measures roughly 1 km by 1 km, rises up to 40 m and holds about 3.5 million cubic metres of sand. Each year it moves around 15 m north-east, towards Grenen, Denmark’s northern tip. It formed more than 300 years ago in an area called Råbjerg Stene, where drifting sand forced people to abandon farmland. A church near Skagen was also buried by sand, and only its tower is still visible.
From the car park you walk into the dune landscape. There are toilets and picnic tables, and guided nature tours are offered. Allow one to two hours. There may be quicksand on the dunes, so take care.
