Thy National Park
Nørre Vorupør, Denmark
A long strip of dunes, heath and wind-shaped plantations along the North Sea coast of Thy, with marked trails and beach access. Pack a windproof layer, as the weather changes quickly.
Thy National Park was established in 2007 and opened on 22 August 2008. It was Denmark’s first national park. It covers 244 km² and stretches about 55 km along the North Sea coast, but is only 5 to 12 km wide. The landscape is shaped by dunes, either bare or covered with heath, meadows and conifer plantations, along with limestone slopes, bogs and small lakes. Wildlife includes red deer, cranes and otters. Wolves have been reported since 2009, and a dead wolf was found in 2012.
The national park centre in Nørre Vorupør opened in June 2021, with a model of the park and films. Opening hours depend on the season. The centre is a good starting point for planning walks through the dunes and heath. Allow at least half a day. The Hanstholm wildlife reserve is only about 60 to 70 per cent accessible, and access is restricted from 1 April to 15 July because of the breeding season.
