Rauma Old Town

Rauma, Finland

History

A wooden town centre on the west coast with brightly painted houses, a medieval church and a tradition of lace-making. Wander the lanes around the Old Market Square and look out for the handmade lace in the small shops.

Old Rauma has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The district consists of around 600 wooden buildings in the Neo-Renaissance style, built during the town's era of maritime-trade prosperity. Rauma received its town charter in 1442. The Franciscan monastery and church date from the 14th century; fires in 1640 and 1682 destroyed many wooden houses, which were then rebuilt. Landmarks include the town hall and the Church of the Holy Cross.

Rauma is also known for its bobbin lace. Since 1971 the Lace Week, with exhibitions in Old Rauma, has been held every year and ends with the "Black Lace Night". The town also has its own dialect, Rauman giäl. Allow two to three hours for a walk through the lanes.
