Hanko
Hanko, Finland
Finland's southernmost town, with a seaside promenade, wooden villas from its spa days and a busy guest harbour. Come in summer for the beaches and the water tower view, and park near the harbour to explore on foot.
Hanko lies at the southern tip of the Finnish mainland, about 130 km west of Helsinki. The town received its town charter in 1874, two years after the railway opened, and was founded on the port, the railway and the spa. The resort attracted wealthy summer guests from as far away as St Petersburg, who built wooden villas in Classical and Neo-Renaissance styles; many stand on Bulevardi, with more along Ranta.
The coastline is about 130 km long, of which roughly 30 km is sandy beach, earning Hanko the nickname "Riviera of Finland". Today its port is the fourth largest in the country. The water tower and the church took on their present appearance after the Second World War; in 1940 the peninsula had been leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base. Allow half a day for a stroll past the villas and along the waterfront; summer is the best time to visit. The centre is easy to explore on foot.
