Fiskars Village

Raasepori, Finland

History

A former ironworks village where old red-brick mills along the river now hold craft studios, shops and cafés. Plan a few hours to browse, and visit on a summer weekend when the studios are open; it is a short detour off the coast road.

Fiskars in western Uusimaa came into being in 1649, when the German-born Petter Thorwöste founded an ironworks here. It gave rise to the Fiskars company, known for its scissors. Puukko knives and ploughs were also made here. From 1891 to 1952 a narrow-gauge railway ran to the harbour at Pohjankuru. The manor house was designed in 1818 by the Italian-born architect Charles Bassi.

Today about 600 people live in the village, which has developed into a lively centre of Finnish art and design. The Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale has been held since 2019. Allow several hours for a visit. Check beforehand which workshops, exhibitions and shops are open.
