Arènes de Nîmes

Nîmes, France

History

A Roman amphitheatre with two tiers of arches that is remarkably intact and still hosts bullfights and shows. Walk the upper gallery for views across the city's rooftops.

The Arènes de Nîmes were built around AD 100, about twenty years after the Colosseum in Rome. The oval measures 133 m by 101 m, and the façade is 21 m high with two storeys of 60 arcades each. Originally, 34 rows of seats held around 24,000 spectators. Later the building became a fortress and a residential quarter; in the 18th century about 150 houses stood inside it. They were demolished from 1786 onwards.

Bullfights have been held here since 1853, above all during the Feria de Nîmes; there are also concerts and other events. Allow about an hour and a half for a visit with an audio guide. Opening hours vary by season and for events, so check them in advance.
