Oklahoma City National Memorial
Oklahoma City, OK
A quiet memorial with a reflecting pool, a field of empty chairs and a museum on the site of the 1995 bombing. Allow an hour or two, and consider a visit at dusk when the chairs are lit.
The memorial stands on the site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, which was destroyed by a bombing on April 19, 1995; 168 people died. The Gates of Time frame the minute 9:02: the 9:01 gate stands for "innocence before the attack," the 9:03 gate for the beginning of healing. Between them lies the Reflecting Pool; on the lawn stand 168 empty chairs in nine rows, corresponding to the floors of the building, 19 of them smaller for the children who were killed.
The chairs are lit in the evening. There is also the Survivor Tree, an elm that withstood the blast, and the Survivor Wall with granite panels from the old building. The museum is in the neighboring Journal Record Building, which was damaged in the attack. Allow one to two hours for the grounds and the museum; because of the evening lighting, a visit around dusk is worthwhile.
