Guthrie Historic District
Guthrie, OK
A small city of late-nineteenth-century brick storefronts that was once the territorial capital. Park near the main street and walk the blocks of antique shops and cafés, which are quietest on weekday mornings.
Guthrie arose during the Land Run of April 22, 1889: within a few hours, about 10,000 people settled in what became the capital of Oklahoma Territory. The town remained the territorial capital and, after 1907, was the first capital of the state, until Oklahoma City won a statewide vote in 1910. The historic district covers more than 2,000 buildings on about 570 hectares (1,400 acres) and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1999.
The downtown is easy to explore on foot; allow one to two hours. The town has about 10,700 residents and lies north of Oklahoma City, which makes it a good stop along the way.
