Schloss Neuschwanstein
Füssen, Germany
King Ludwig II’s fairy-tale castle above the Alpine foothills. Buy timed tickets online.
King Ludwig II had the castle built above the Pöllat gorge from September 1869. His living quarters were ready in 1884, but the building was never fully completed. After Ludwig's death the castle opened to visitors on 1 August 1886. The Singers' Hall and Throne Hall draw on medieval legends such as Lohengrin and Parsifal, inspired by Richard Wagner's operas. Since 2025 Neuschwanstein and three other castles of Ludwig's have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You can only see the interior on a guided tour of about half an hour. Book timed tickets online as early as possible; the Ticket Centre in Hohenschwangau has only leftover tickets, subject to availability. With around 1.5 million visitors a year and up to 6,000 a day in summer, it gets very busy. From Hohenschwangau village you walk uphill on a paved road or a steeper forest path, each about 45 minutes, or take the bus or a horse-drawn carriage. The pay car parks fill up early in season. The classic view is from the Marienbrücke.
