Linderhof Palace

The smallest of Ludwig II’s palaces and the only one he saw finished, set in formal gardens in the quiet Graswang valley. Palace tours are timed; the artificial Venus Grotto in the park reopened in 2025 after restoration.
Linderhof Palace stands in the Graswang valley, about 10 km west of Ettal. From 1869 Ludwig II enlarged the hunting lodge he had inherited into a rococo palace modelled on the Petit Trianon at Versailles. It is the only one of his great palace projects to be completed in his lifetime, and he lived there for most of the time from 1876. The park, some 50 hectares in size, was laid out by Carl von Effner. In July 2025 the palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Palaces of Ludwig II.
The park includes the Moorish Kiosk, Hunding's Hut and the Venus Grotto, an artificial stalactite cave modelled on the Blue Grotto of Capri. After ten years of restoration, it has been open to visitors again since 11 April 2025. The palace can be visited only on a guided tour. Allow three to four hours for the palace and park; in high season an early visit is advisable.
