A UNESCO-listed rococo pilgrimage church standing alone in meadows, with a bright white-and-gold interior by the Zimmermann brothers. Entry is free; there is a paid car park beside the church.
The Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour, known simply as "Die Wies", stands in the hamlet of Wies near Steingaden, alone amid the woods, meadows and moorland of the Alpine foothills, with views of the Ammergau Alps. It owes its existence to a miracle: in 1738 a farmer's wife saw tears in the eyes of a wooden figure of the scourged Christ. Dominikus Zimmermann built the church between 1745 and 1754, and his brother Johann Baptist painted the ceiling frescoes.
Architecture, stucco, sculpture and painting merge into a rococo Gesamtkunstwerk, and the church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Entry is free, but visits are restricted during services, so check the service times beforehand, especially on Sundays. There is a pay car park about 200 m away.
