House on the Rock
Spring Green, WI
A house built on a rock chimney, with an Infinity Room over the valley and the world's largest indoor carousel. It takes hours and gets stranger as you go.
Alex Jordan Jr. began building a rambling house atop Deer Shelter Rock, a rock tower near Spring Green, around 1945, not far from Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin. He opened it to visitors in 1959 and kept adding new collections. The Infinity Room juts out about 66 m (218 feet) with no visible supports and has more than 3,000 windows. The carousel, billed as the world's largest, carries 269 figures but not a single horse and glows with more than 20,000 lights; you cannot ride it.
The self-guided tour is split into three sections, with the re-created "Streets of Yesterday," automated music machines and a sea creature 61 m (200 feet) long. Allow at least three hours for all three sections and arrive early, since some areas close by early afternoon. The regular season runs from March to early November. Neil Gaiman made the house a setting in his novel "American Gods."
