Taliesin

Spring Green, WI

History

Frank Lloyd Wright’s home, studio and school on 800 hilly acres; tours start from the visitor center on County C.

Taliesin is the estate Frank Lloyd Wright began building near Spring Green in 1911. According to the operator, the grounds cover about 800 acres (roughly 320 hectares) and include the residence, the Hillside complex with its theater, and the “Romeo and Juliet” windmill. The residence burned in 1914 and again in 1925 and was rebuilt each time; in 1932 Wright founded the Taliesin Fellowship here, a community of apprentices. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and, since 2019, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing “The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.”

You see the estate on guided tours (minimum age 8), plus a shorter self-guided house tour via an app. Tours start at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, and a shuttle takes you out to the grounds. The guided House Tour takes about 1.5 hours, the Highlights Tour 2.5 hours and the Estate Tour around 4 hours. Tours run daily from May to October; in April and from November to mid-December there are only House Tours, Friday to Sunday (as of October 2026). Book early, as tours often sell out.
