Évora Historic Centre and Roman Temple

Évora, Portugal

History

A walled city whose centre holds a well-preserved Roman temple near the cathedral, with whitewashed lanes and old squares around it. Park outside the walls and allow half a day on foot.

The Roman temple of Évora dates from the 1st century AD. The name "Temple of Diana" goes back to a 17th-century legend; according to current thinking it was probably dedicated to the Emperor Augustus. What survives is a granite podium measuring about 25 by 15 m and Corinthian columns with marble capitals. From the 14th century until 1836 it was incorporated into a building that served as a butcher's, which paradoxically saved it. It was restored in 1872.

The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1986). In the 15th century it was a residence of the Portuguese kings, and it has a cathedral completed in the 13th century. In 1559 Cardinal Henry founded the university, which was run by the Jesuits. Whitewashed houses with azulejos and wrought-iron balconies shape the townscape. Allow half a day for a walk around and leave your vehicle outside the walls.
