Monsaraz

Monsaraz, Portugal

History

A hilltop village of whitewashed houses and a medieval castle, with long views across the plains of the Alentejo and the Alqueva reservoir. Park outside the walls and walk in; the cobbles are uneven.

Monsaraz was captured in 1167 by Geraldo Sem Pavor (“Gerald the Fearless”); it became definitively Christian in 1232 under King Sancho II, and the castle passed to the Knights Templar. The village remained the seat of the municipality until 1838. The keep rises above the fortified village with its slate-paved lanes and whitewashed houses. From the hilltop the view takes in the Alentejo landscape and the Alqueva reservoir.

Also worth seeing are the parish church of Santa Maria da Lagoa and, in the surrounding countryside, prehistoric megaliths, including the monuments at Xerez. Park outside the walls and go in on foot; the paving is uneven, so sturdy footwear helps. The village is small, and one to two hours is enough for a walk around, longer if you stop for the view and a meal.
