Gradske zidine

Dubrovnik's city walls run for 1,940 m around the old town. Built mostly between the 13th and 17th centuries, they reach up to 25 m high and are 4 to 6 m thick on the landward side. The system includes 16 towers and several fortresses: the round Minčeta Tower (1464) at the highest point in the north-west, Fort Bokar by the Pile Gate, the free-standing Revelin Fortress (1549) to the east and St John's Fortress by the harbour. The old town and its walls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the full circuit with photo stops; the seaward side has slightly fewer steps. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people and you avoid the midday heat. Take water, a hat and sun cream. Lovrijenac Fortress, outside the Pile Gate, has its own entrance and adds at least another hour.
