The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) reaches deep into Montenegro's mountains; at its far end lies Kotor's old town, with the Romanesque Cathedral of St Tryphon, consecrated in 1166. The town walls are some 4.5 km long and up to 20 m high, and largely took their present form under Venetian rule from 1420. The region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and since 2017 the fortifications have also been listed as part of the Venetian Works of Defence.
Around 1,350 steps climb along the walls to St John's Fortress (San Giovanni) at about 280 m, passing the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, built in 1518. Allow 30 to 60 minutes each way and set off early: mornings are cooler and quieter, while cruise passengers arrive later in the day. There is pay parking at the harbour next to the old town. Perast is about 20 minutes away; off its shore lies the man-made island of Our Lady of the Rocks.
