Walls of Ston
Ston, Croatia
Medieval walls climbing over the hill between Ston and Mali Ston, built to guard the salt pans of the Republic of Ragusa. Walk them, then try the local oysters.
After Ston came under the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1333, the Republic secured the narrowest point of the Pelješac peninsula with a system of walls that was extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. It mainly protected the salt pans, which contributed to the Republic's wealth and are still worked today. The complex was originally over 7 km long; about 5.5 km survive, and of some 40 towers, 20 still stand. Fort Bartolomija occupies the highest point, and Koruna Tower stands in Mali Ston.
There are three entrances, in Ston and Mali Ston. Walking from Ston to Mali Ston takes about 40 minutes, and the whole route about an hour and a half, with an ascent of just over 150 m. The path is partly steep and so narrow that overtaking is difficult. The shorter circuit around Ston takes about 20 minutes. On the way you look down on the salt pans; Mali Ston is known for its oysters.
