Lago di Carezza
Nova Levante, Italy
A small green lake below the Latemar spires, one of the most photographed in the Dolomites. A short path circles it.
Lake Carezza (Karersee) lies at just over 1,500 m above Nova Levante (Welschnofen), at the foot of the Latemar, with the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) rising behind it. It is fed by underground springs from the Latemar, so its water level varies with the seasons; at high water it is about 300 m long, 140 m wide and 22 m deep. According to legend, a wizard smashed a rainbow after the nymph Ondina had vanished – hence the lake's many colours.
From the paid car park right by the lake, an underpass takes you to the shore in a few minutes; there are toilets there too. The short path around the fenced lake takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and there is also a variant with a suspension bridge. Swimming is forbidden and the lake is a natural monument. It is busiest in summer; early morning and evening are quieter and the light is at its best.
