Alpe di Siusi

Often called Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow, with easy walks towards Sassolungo and the Sciliar. The road up from Siusi is closed to most private cars during the day, so take the cable car from Siusi or drive up early.
Covering some 56 km², the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) is regarded as Europe's largest high-altitude alpine meadow and lies between 1,680 and 2,350 m. The Sciliar (Schlern) massif bounds it to the south-east, while the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto rise to the east. It belongs to the municipality of Castelrotto, and only just over 230 people live here year-round. In summer there are around 350 km of walking trails; in winter, about 60 km of cross-country ski trails and 35 km of winter walking paths.
Allow a full day for a circular walk across the meadows. The road from Siusi to Compatsch is closed to ordinary traffic every day from 9 am to 5 pm; only guests with a permit, such as those staying at hotels on the plateau, may drive up then. Outside these hours, too, the number of cars allowed is limited. The easier option is the Alpe di Siusi cable car: it takes about 20 minutes from Siusi, where there is plenty of parking at the valley station, to Compatsch. At the top, a bus links Compatsch with Saltria.
