The road where colonial militia fought British troops on 19 April 1775, now a 5-mile trail between Lexington and Concord past restored houses. Free; start at the Minute Man Visitor Center off MA-2A.
Established in 1959, Minute Man National Historical Park spans Lexington, Lincoln and Concord and commemorates April 19, 1775, when fighting between British troops and colonial militia set off the American Revolutionary War. The Battle Road Trail, about 8 km (5 miles) long, runs from Meriam's Corner in Concord to the park's eastern boundary in Lexington, partly along remnants of the original road, through fields, wetlands and woods.
Start at the Minute Man Visitor Center on Route 2A in Lincoln, where the 25-minute multimedia show "Road to Revolution" and a 12 m (40-foot) mural give you the overview. Along the way you pass a monument at the spot where Paul Revere was captured, and the restored 18th-century Hartwell Tavern; its parking area is on Route 2A, about 1.6 km (1 mile) from the visitor center. The visitor center and the tavern are closed in winter.
