Mount Scott
Medicine Park, OK
A paved three-mile road climbs to the top of this granite peak in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The view takes in lakes, boulder fields and the open plains; long trailers are not allowed on the summit road.
Mount Scott in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge rises to 2,464 feet (751 m), and a 3-mile (4.8 km) paved road leads to the summit. The rock is igneous and dates from the Cambrian. From the top you look far out over the Oklahoma plains, and to the west you can pick out Elk Mountain, Mount Sheridan and the unofficial Haley Peak. There is no marked hiking trail to the summit; on foot or by bike, the road is strenuous because of the grade, crosswinds and sharp curves.
The refuge began in 1901 as a forest reserve and now covers about 59,000 acres (239 km²). It is home to around 650 bison, whose herd was founded in 1907 with 15 animals from the Bronx Zoo, about 1,000 elk, Texas longhorns and prairie dogs. Admission is free. Pedestrians and cyclists have their own rules on the summit road: according to several sources it is open to them only in the early morning, and groups of more than eight people are not allowed. Ask the refuge for current times before you go.
