Baelo Claudia

The ruins of a Roman fishing town right on the beach at Bolonia, with a theatre, temples and the tanks where fish sauce was made. Next to it rises the huge Bolonia dune, worth the barefoot climb.
Baelo Claudia was founded at the end of the 2nd century BC on the Strait of Gibraltar, about 22 km from Tarifa. The town lived off tuna fishing, fish salting and the production of garum, a fish sauce. Emperor Claudius granted it the status of a municipium. The excavations have uncovered a forum, a basilica, a theatre seating up to 2,000 people, a temple of Isis, baths and fish-salting factories. An earthquake around the middle of the 2nd century caused severe damage, and by the 6th century at the latest the town had been abandoned.
The ruins border Bolonia beach, where a dune about 30 m high has been protected as a natural monument since 2001. A visitor centre provides information about the site. Allow half a day for the ruins and the dune. Try to arrive early, before it gets hot and crowded.
