Puente Nuevo

Ronda, Spain

Views

An 18th-century bridge spanning a gorge nearly 100 m deep in the middle of town.

The Puente Nuevo links Ronda's old town with the newer El Mercadillo quarter, spanning the El Tajo gorge of the Río Guadalevín. A first bridge, begun in 1735, collapsed after six years, killing around 50 people. The present bridge, designed by José Martín de Aldehuela, was completed in May 1793 after more than three decades of construction. It is 98 m high.

The chamber above the central arch now houses an interpretation centre on the bridge's construction, geology, nature and the town's history. Allow half a day including the viewpoints. Good views of the bridge can be had from the Mirador de Aldehuela, the Jardines de Cuenca and the lower-lying Mirador del Viento; some paths are steep, so sturdy shoes are advisable. To avoid tour groups, come early, before 10 am, or late in the afternoon. There is a pay car park on Plaza del Socorro, a five-minute walk away.
