Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain
A white village whose houses are built under huge rock overhangs.
Over thousands of years the Río Trejo carved a gorge into the rock, and the people of Setenil de las Bodegas built their houses right under the overhanging cliffs. The best-known street is Calle Cuevas del Sol, where restaurants and shops sit beneath the rock. On Calle Cuevas de la Sombra, the rock forms a complete natural roof along one stretch, so the lane feels like a tunnel. Above the village rise the Torre del Homenaje, the last tower of a 14th-century Moorish fortress, and the late Gothic Iglesia de la Encarnación, begun after the Christian reconquest and not completed until 1614.
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the lanes, or closer to 2.5 hours with photo stops. Don't drive into the narrow centre; park on the edge of the village instead, for example on Calle San Sebastián or in the Los Caños car park. Ronda is about 20 minutes away. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit.
