Jenny Lake

Moose, WY

Nature

A glacial lake at the foot of the Tetons, with a shuttle boat to the trail for Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Busy; arrive early.

Jenny Lake formed during the Ice Age, when glaciers scoured hollows into the valley floor that later filled with water. At its deepest point the lake is 78 m (256 feet) deep. The visitor center occupies the historic 1920s studio of photographer Harrison Crandall. The Discovery Trail, a 0.6 km (0.35-mile) accessible path, leads to the shore. Black bears, grizzlies, moose and deer live in the area.

Taking the shuttle boat across the lake, it is 1.6 km (1 mile) round trip from the west boat dock to Hidden Falls, a cascade about 30 m (100 feet) high, and 3.2 km (2 miles) round trip to Inspiration Point. On foot from the visitor center it is 8 km (5 miles) and 9.7 km (6 miles) respectively. Allow half a day for the boat ride and hike. The parking lot is limited and fills quickly in summer; if you park along the road, pull completely off the shoulder. Stay at least 91 m (100 yards) from bears and 23 m (25 yards) from other wildlife.
