Bagno Vignoni
San Quirico d’Orcia, Italy
A village whose main square is a large stone pool of steaming spring water, used since Roman times. Bathing in the square is not allowed, but warm water runs free over the terraces of the old mills below the village.
Bagno Vignoni is a hamlet of San Quirico d’Orcia in the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Instead of a square, the centre has a stone basin measuring 49 × 29 m, built in the 16th century and fed by a thermal spring at 49 °C. The Romans already valued the water, and regulated therapeutic use is documented from 1170. Famous visitors included Lorenzo il Magnifico, Pope Pius II and Catherine of Siena, who are remembered by a loggia and a chapel.
Bathing in the basin on the square is forbidden. The natural pools in the Parco dei Mulini below the village, however, are free to enter; there the water cools as it runs through channels. One to two hours is enough for the village and the park, and the basin is quieter early in the day.
