The Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The area includes Pienza, Montalcino, San Quirico d’Orcia and Castiglione d’Orcia, among others. Its landscape of hills, vineyards, olive groves and cypresses was deliberately reshaped during the Renaissance. Pope Pius II had Pienza rebuilt as an ideal town in the 15th century, while the medieval villages grew up along the Via Francigena pilgrim route.
The most famous group of cypresses stands at I Triboli on the SR2 Cassia between San Quirico d’Orcia and Torrenieri; it is easy to see from the road, and there is parking nearby. Other classic shots include the cypress avenue at Poggio Covili, the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta between San Quirico and Pienza, and the winding road to Monticchiello. The light is especially atmospheric at sunrise and sunset. When taking photos, stay on public paths. Allow a day for a circular drive with stops in Pienza or Bagno Vignoni.
