Before you go

  • Eight Tuscan localities are on the UNESCO list, among them Florence, Pisa's cathedral square, San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza and the Val d'Orcia.
  • Many Italian historic centres have limited traffic zones (ZTL). Follow the signs and park outside, at designated areas, rather than driving in with a motorhome.
  • Rules on overnight stays outside campsites are set locally in Italy. Check them with the municipality before parking overnight, and prefer campsites and designated motorhome areas.

Planning

Tuscany borders Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Umbria and Lazio. Hills make up nearly two thirds of the terrain, so expect winding roads between towns. Florence is the capital and largest city. The UNESCO list covers Florence (1982), Pisa (1987), San Gimignano (1990), Siena (1995), Pienza (1996), the Val d'Orcia (2004), the Medici Villas and Gardens (2013) and Montecatini Terme (2021).

Getting around

Limited traffic zones (ZTL) protect many historic centres in Italy, and entering them without permission can lead to fines. Look for the signs at the edge of towns and park outside. Tuscany is also known for the Chianti wine area, where roads run through hills and vineyards. Check municipal rules for overnight stays outside campsites before you plan a route.

FAQs

What is a ZTL and does it affect motorhomes?

A ZTL (zona a traffico limitato) is a limited traffic zone in a historic centre. Access is restricted, and driving in without permission can be fined. Park outside the zone and check the signs and municipal rules.

How many UNESCO sites does Tuscany have?

Eight localities: Florence, Pisa's cathedral square, San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza, the Val d'Orcia, the Medici Villas and Gardens, and Montecatini Terme as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.

Can I park a motorhome overnight outside a campsite?

Under Article 185 of the Italian road code, a motorhome may generally park where parking is allowed, if it stays in driving configuration: no awning, table or chairs set out and no waste discharge. Municipalities can ban overnight parking, and protected areas are stricter. Check signs and local rules.
