Piazzale Michelangelo
Florence, Italy
A broad terrace on the hill south of the Arno with a panorama over Florence, the Duomo dome and the river bridges. It is easy to reach by car or bus; come near sunset, when the light is best and it gets busy.
Piazzale Michelangelo is a broad terrace on the hill south of the Arno, in the Oltrarno district. Giuseppe Poggi designed it in 1869, when Florence was the capital of Italy, as part of the city's urban renewal. From here you look out over Florence and the Arno, taking in the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Croce, the Ponte Vecchio, the Bargello and Forte Belvedere.
In the middle stands a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David, together with copies of the four allegories from the Medici Chapel in San Lorenzo. Poggi planned a neoclassical loggia as a Michelangelo museum; it was never used for that purpose and today houses a café-restaurant. The square marks the end of the Viale dei Colli, an avenue about 8 km long along the San Miniato hill.
