Uffizi Gallery

Florence, Italy

History

One of Italy's great picture galleries, in a Renaissance palace beside the Arno, with Botticelli's best-known works among its collections. Book a timed ticket in advance and plan on at least half a day; drive no further than the edge of the old town.

Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned Giorgio Vasari to build the Uffizi in Florence from 1560; the name means "offices", because the building was meant to bring the duchy's administration together under one roof. The upper floor soon housed the Medici sculpture collection, and the Tribuna was finished in 1584. The collection has been open to the public since 1769. It runs from the Middle Ages to the modern period and includes works by Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, as well as ancient Roman sculpture.

The Uffizi is among the most visited museums in Italy, with around 5.2 million visitors in 2024. Tickets can be reserved in advance, which is advisable when it is busy. For a first overview, allow at least half a day. A cloakroom is available free of charge, and there are lifts. If you travel by motorhome, it is best not to drive into the old town but to park on the outskirts and use public transport.
