Sandstone walls 2,000 feet high above the Virgin River. A shuttle runs the scenic drive for much of the year.
The North Fork of the Virgin River carved Zion Canyon into Navajo Sandstone, in places about 610 m (2,000 feet) deep. The Riverside Walk leads from the Temple of Sinawava to the Narrows, where the canyon floor averages only about 6 m (20 feet) wide. The best-known hike is Angels Landing: 8.7 km (5.4 miles) round trip, about 450 m (1,488 feet) of elevation gain, roughly four hours. For the final chained section beyond Scout Lookout you need a permit from a lottery; you can hike to Scout Lookout without one.
During shuttle season the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars; the free shuttle serves nine stops and takes about 45 minutes from the visitor center to the Temple of Sinawava. Springdale has paid parking and a free town shuttle. Strict limits apply on the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway and its tunnel: single vehicles may be no more than 3.45 m (11 feet 4 inches) high, 2.39 m (7 feet 10 inches) wide and 10.9 m (35 feet 9 inches) long, and larger vehicles are turned away (as of October 2026).
