Wolfeboro Downtown and Lake Winnipesaukee

Wolfeboro, NH

History

A lakeside town on Lake Winnipesaukee with a compact main street, a town dock and ice cream shops. Walk to the water, join a lake cruise if the weather is good, and expect busy streets in July and August.

Wolfeboro, on Lake Winnipesaukee, calls itself the "Oldest Summer Resort in America." The town is named after the British general James Wolfe; the land grant dates from 1759 and the town was incorporated in 1770. Before that, Governor John Wentworth had Kingswood built here, New England's first summer country estate. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire, at 72 square miles (about 186 km²).

In the town center and along the waterfront, a seasonal farmers market and free concerts take place; on and around the lake you can fish, boat and hike. One to two hours is enough for a stroll along Main Street and down to the shore; with a lake cruise it becomes half a day. The town is likely to be busy in high summer, and you will have better luck finding parking early in the day.
