Völklingen Ironworks

Völklingen, Germany

History

A huge disused ironworks with blast furnaces, pipes and walkways that you can explore on a marked route. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a jacket, as the walkways are high, open and often windy.

The Völklingen Ironworks in Saarland was founded in 1873 and shut down in 1986. From a small puddling and rolling mill it grew by 1890 into Germany's largest producer of iron girders. In 1994 UNESCO inscribed the ironworks' pig-iron production as the first industrial monument from the age of industrialisation on the World Heritage List; the World Heritage area covers 7.46 hectares.

Visitors can see, among other things, the blast-furnace group, the coking plant, the ore hall and the blowing-engine hall. From a viewing platform 27 metres up you get a wide view over the site. The ScienceCenter Ferrodrom, opened in 2004, uses multimedia to show how iron and steel are made. The site also hosts temporary exhibitions and concerts. Allow three to four hours for a visit. Sturdy shoes are advisable, as the site consists of industrial plant with stairs and metal walkways.
